An Experiment I’ve Been Doing – And The Outcome!

Be Who You Are quote | Helen Joy Butler

Over the past few months I’ve been doing a little experiment.

Nothing “science-y” – that’s certainly not my area of expertise!

My experiment has involved something a little more practical; something we have to connect with each and every day if we want to go outside the home!

One thing I love – and always have done! – is clothes.

So for the past few months I’ve been doing a little experiment with them, to see how much I can shift my energy and show up how I want to show up each and every day.

When I was 17, having just finished high school, I wanted to go into fashion design. So I applied to the best college at the time, with fingers crossed, hoping the hours of sewing, creating, designing my own clothes up to that point would land me a position in the course. And it did. But I didn’t accept the position because at the same time I was “encouraged” to apply for a teaching degree, which I inevitably accepted, steering my life onto another path.

But I’ve always loved fashion. Not the “I’ve got to be part of the crowd and wear the latest thing” kind of fashion, but the “I love how I can express how I’m feeling in this moment through my clothes” kind of deal.

This is definitely a HSP / empath thing for sure! It’s all about the emotions right??

So each morning I wake up, have breakfast and a shower, and then decide what I’m going to wear. (This makes me a hopeless packer when I travel but that’s a totally other story!)

I have to connect with how I feel each morning – and then decide how my clothes can help me show up in the way I want to.

But there’s the catch right there!

I might be feeling heavy.

I might be feeling sad or miserable, or upset, or joyous, or energetic, or grounded.

And so it’s in those moments – once I’ve decided how I feel – I then decide “Is this really how I want to feel today?”. And if it isn’t – because walking around upset, sad, heavy, emotional doesn’t feel good that day – I work toward shifting my inner reality through external means. (It’s the infinity symbol concept all over again!).

Now I’m not saying I can’t feel upset, sad, heavy, emotional. I certainly can! I’m all for owning and diving deep with my emotions on any given day. To be honest, I do connect with them (and often other peoples’ emotions) all the time!

But that doesn’t mean I can’t dress in a way that makes me feel and look good – AND use the feeling I evoke from looking good to help me feel a sense of calm, peace, sanctuary. (infinity symbol right there)

So back to my experiment.

My sister and I have started getting into the habit every now and then of sending selfies to each other, to say “Hey does this belt work?” or “What do you think of this outfit?” or “Check out the cool top I just bought!”. It’s fun, and keeps us connected given we live quite a distance apart.

We’ve been doing this for some time but about a month ago I decided I wanted to deliberately support the inner journey I’m currently taking by using my clothes to carry me there.

And even though I’m up and showered early to do the school run, I manage to make it happen!

(I share that just in case you think I have hours to bring my outfit, hair, makeup together. I don’t. Fifteen minutes max is all I have in the morning. It’s amazing what you can do with a short amount of time when you’re really set on something!).

So this has been my experiment – and I’m loving it!

  1. I’ve started bringing outfits together that I’ve never worn before
  2. I’ve noticed that comfort is my thing, no matter what the occasion
  3. I love, love, love colour – and I’ve discovered that it’s OK to mix it together however I want
  4. By dressing in a different way I’ve felt more energised, focused, creative, happy – even if I’m spending the day at home
  5. I’ve shifted things out of my wardrobe that don’t feel right (ie on my body, or the vibe I’m trying to create in my life)

It would seem rude not to share some of my ‘looks’ with you so just scroll down a little and you’ll get the picture!

So what’s my HSP takeaway from this experience, that I can share with you today?

That what you wear can have a massive impact on how you feel.

And that you can use your clothes to work toward the feeling you want.

Infinity symbol in all it’s glory! (aka use the outer you to create the inner you.)

You don’t need to be ‘fashionable’.

You don’t need to be skinny.

You don’t need to run to the shops and spend money on items you’ll only wear once.

You only need to be who you are

And allow your clothes to share with the world who you truly are, in a way that feels right to your soul, not someone else’s.

Because you are loved. And you are worth it. And most of all, you are responsible for how you show up in the world – so why not let your clothes help you with that?

With much love,

Helen xx
