Sanctuary Tips and Tricks with Helen Joy Butler

Each week on FACEBOOK I share #TipTuesday. In these posts I share practical advice on everything Sanctuary – including practical, emotional and spiritual advice, to help you move forward with Sanctuary in your home, body and life.

These posts are often quite long and I thought they’d be great to share here with you in case you missed them. And let’s face it, things move rather quickly on social media and you may not have seen them fly by!

Also, I got a little sidetracked with my Aware Child / Soul article series so these tips are actually from October! Eek!

Let’s go!

Tip 1 – Nature. It’s the best way I know how to bring Sanctuary into all aspects of my life.

What are some easy ways to do that?

Bring plants, flowers, crystals, rocks into your home, office, or other spaces you spend time in. Even a photo, painting or picture of nature helps!

By spending time sitting on the grass, walking in the sand, swimming in the ocean, climbing a mountain, going outside to eat your lunch (whether that’s in the city or anywhere else you happen to be).

By going out, with the people you love, to enjoy nature in your part of the world – to events happening in and around your home.

This is what connecting with Nature and Sanctuary looked like for me and my family this past weekend – fireworks at Riverfire, on the Brisbane River, and flowers at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Both were free events, easy to get to, and brought MASSIVE smiles and Sanctuary to our day.

Nature. Get your fix today!

TIP 2 – What support do you have around you? To help you live your best Sanctuary-filled life?

Women Supporting Each Other | The Photo Forest

Yesterday I had the pleasure of sitting with a friend for two hours, supporting, listening, holding space. And having her do the same for me.

Even better, I get to do this again on Thursday and Friday with two other female friends.

My life didn’t always look like this. Up until my 40s I was very much a solo woman. Sure I had friends, but not friends I truly opened up to.

But now I do.

Yesterday there were tears. And I guarantee there will be more before the week is out. Not because things are going pear shaped in our lives but because we can see the incredible future each of us have within our reach.

To know there are other women cheering you on from the sidelines, and for me to gift them the same, is one of life’s true blessings.

TIP 3 – What do the people around you need, to help them achieve some sort of Sanctuary in their lives today?

Perhaps they need you to visit, phone, spend time with them.

Perhaps they need you to advocate for them when no-one else will.

Perhaps they need a cuddle, or a cup of tea, or help getting to the shops so they can buy groceries.

Perhaps they need you to listen – as a friend says – with your eyes. Because what you notice in the world and what some people say can be quite the opposite.

Perhaps you need to be you, for them.

And perhaps you need to gift the things I’ve shared in this post with yourself.

Because we can all use a little more Sanctuary in our lives, *particularly* those who can’t advocate for themselves or have a voice strong enough to be heard.

So – a challenge for you today.

Who can you help bring more Sanctuary into their lives today? And what does that look like? Feel free to share in the comments.

TIP 4 – Listen with your eyes.

At the Cafe | The Photo Forest - Helen Joy Butler

A friend shared this wisdom with me many years ago and it’s something I’ve used ever since.

In reality it means – people can say one thing but their actions show another. Watch what they do and you’ll see the truth.

I’d like to take this a step further.

What if we watched our children – who often can’t express what they fully mean – and listened with our hearts?

What if we gave them what we knew they needed – to help them grow into caring, compassionate, thoughtful adults – by connecting in with our own hearts?

What if we listened with our own eyes – to how we treat, interact, spend time with our children and other important people in our lives – to truly understand our own level of kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness and the role we play in their journey?

Today I’d like to give you a challenge – to listen with your eyes.

And to do what you know in your heart is right, once you’ve absorbed what you’ve seen. You might be surprised at the difference you make in someone else’s life – and your own.

Tip 5 – Rituals.

Sacred Ceremony | The Photo Forest - Helen Joy Butler

When you hear that word, what do you think of?

  • Weekends away with ritual and sacred ceremony?
  • Yoga and meditation each morning?
  • Chanting, singing, standing naked under the full moon?

What if there was a ritual in your day that you weren’t even aware of – because it was a ‘normal’ part of your daily routine?

Why am I even asking you this?

I was on a Mother-Son weekend last weekend and had an interesting conversation with one of the mothers there.

The weekend we were on was “roughing” it – and as part of that there were no shower facilities. There were pit toilets, hand basins and a small mirror – that was it on the ‘personal hygiene’ front.

The Mum I was talking with was saying that there wasn’t even a way to really wash your face – meaning, cleansing, moisturising, perhaps adding a little makeup (not that we needed it on this particular weekend in the bush but I totally understood what she was saying).

And then she said – “It’s interesting isn’t it. This little ritual that we do every day, that we don’t even think of as ritual. It’s so important.”

And she’s right!

There are SO many rituals in our day that we don’t even recognise. Whether it’s your morning or evening skin care regime, your exercise or mindfulness practices, your weekend connection with family and friends – Ritual is EVERYWHERE!

Sometimes you just have to rough it for a weekend to realise it.

I hope you enjoyed these tips! I’d love to know which one you’re going to start with today – go ahead and share it in the comments!

With much love,
