Are you sensitive? Or just more aware?

Just over two months ago I started seeing my friend Colleen to get my bars run.

Not being an expert in the field like Colleen, I have no real way to explain what this means other than I lay on a treatment bed, Colleen puts her hands on my head and energetically ‘runs’ the bars. I absolutely love it and have seen a *massive* change in my life since seeing her regularly.

While I’m lying on the treatment bed Colleen and I have a good chat. Sometimes it’s about a favourite recipe that needs to be shared, or what we did on the weekend, or the funny thing our child did last week.

But at other times Colleen pulls out a piece of wisdom from left field – or that’s what it seems like, but we all know it’s not right? Through running my bars Colleen has tapped into the inner workings inside my body, connected with my soul, and is shifting me big time!

And so it was, during one of our bars sessions, that Colleen invited me to think of myself as aware, not sensitive.

Now Colleen wasn’t saying “You’re not sensitive Helen”. There’s no doubt about that! But what she was trying to get me to see was that by using the word ‘sensitive’ I was doing myself a disservice.

Let’s think about this for a while.

In my experience, and from what I’ve observed in my friends, clients and other sensitive people, the word ‘sensitive’ hasn’t been used in a positive way. It’s become a term of judgement, of heaviness, of there’s something wrong with you.

If you identify as sensitive I am sure you’ve heard one or more of these throughout your life.

“You’re too sensitive.”

“Why do you have to feel so much?”

“I don’t understand why you’re reacting like that. Stop being so sensitive.”

And on it goes. Until the word ‘sensitive’ has pummelled us into the ground, making us feel worse than we already do.

Interestingly though, when I Googled ‘sensitive’ to get a definition, this is what I found.

When I look through this definition I don’t really feel any negativity or heaviness attached to it. So I can only surmise that the word ‘sensitive’ has been given a negative wrap thanks to the society I/we live in.

A majority of people don’t understand ‘sensitive’ people. And what happens in our society when one group doesn’t understand another? They judge them – and in turn make the person, group or society feel less than.

But it was on the bars treatment table that Colleen invited me to change my thinking. And I’ve been sharing it with everyone I can think of ever since!

Yes I am sensitive BUT I now choose to see myself as aware.

I am aware of the energy around me.

I am aware of the feelings of others.

I am aware of the unseen forces that surround us.

I am aware.

Can you feel the difference?

So what does ‘aware’ mean according to Professor Google?

So today I invite you to shift your thinking.

To remove the heaviness attached to the word ‘sensitive’ and start to bring in the joy attached to the word ‘aware’.

I also invite you to substitute the word ‘aware’ when you might normally use the word ‘sensitive’.

So instead of saying “Yes, I’m sensitive to that energy” say “Yes, I’m more aware of the energy in this room/space/person”.

When someone says “You’re way too sensitive” say “Thank you. Being aware is one of my super powers.”

When speaking about another sensitive soul to a non-sensitive soul say “Yes he/she is really aware of what’s going on here. Isn’t that great?”.

The quote by Esther Jno-Charles explains this beautifully.

“What you focus on expands. So focus on what you want, not what you do not want.”

I don’t know about you, but I want to focus on my awareness and see it for what it is – an incredible super power that I’ve brought with me into this lifetime.
